Solid Chip Shots
Use a 2X4 For Solid Chips

by Tim Jankowski

The Problem

On a short shot just off the edge of the green that requires a simple low running shot, you flip the golf club through impact resulting in poor distance control, off center contact, and a longer putt than you would like.

The Drill

The main principle with which we have built our Scoring Zone School is getting people to understand how the golf club must descend through impact.  This single principle will allow you to make solid contact with all shots around the green.

One drill that is very effective in getting our students to understand how we get the clubhead to descend without crashing on a short shot, is to use a 2X4 ( or small box) on the ground.  By very slowly coming through the impact zone and dragging the 2X4 towards the target, it allows players to feel the rotation of the body necessary to let the hands LEAD.  With the hands leading this allows the clubhead to gradually descend through impact rather than flip or crash. (See picture below)

The Result

Once the feel of body rotating and hands leading is achieved, solid contact is attained and distance control is a matter of how far the arms travel in the backswing, putting you closer to the hole.
